Machu Picchu is the main reason (apart from the delicious food, culture and nature) which leads tourists from all over the world to Peru. It is recognized as one of the new seven world wonders and an UNESCO world heritage site, and has a lot of history to tell. First mentioned in the Chronicle of the Spanish Conquerors, it was recently rediscovered in 1911 by American historian Hiram Bingham. As Machu Picchu is believed to be constructed in the mid-15th century by the Incas, it was a well-designed city of great prestige in its time. Thinking of the Main Square, the Royal Quarters, the Temple of the Three Windows, the Circular Sun Tower, the Sacred Sun Dial and the Burial Grounds, it was high developed and had everything that was needed! Its strategical position high in the mountains gave it a great advantage for surviving many attacks. It is even equipped with great terraces used for agriculture, which they used for farming in different climates. The two beautiful mountains beside the sanctuary, Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu mountain, give it even more special looks. Climbing them, you can see the special shape of Machu Picchu: a Condor! This old symbol is used by the Incas and stands for power and fertility, which do in fact represent this great Inca town.
